Etymology
In oracle-bone script 寅 is the character for arrow, 矢, with a mark added; the roof-like top of the modern form is a corruption of the arrowhead. One early sense is "reverence", the meaning it carries in the Book of Documents.
The Shuowen Jiezi, the Han dynasty dictionary, assigns it to the first month: "yang breath stirs, leaves the Yellow Springs and wants to rise, but yin is still strong", like something held down under a roof and unable to get out. Its zodiac animal is the tiger.
The Old Chinese pronunciation is reconstructed as *[ɢ](r)ər (Baxter and Sagart). Middle Chinese was yin.

As the Monthly General
Tiger is the Monthly General from Minor Snow 小雪, when the Sun enters Sagittarius, until the next solar term of the same kind. In the chart it is written as the Tiger general. Its classical name is 功曹, which the classical texts use far less often than the name of the branch itself.
