Etymology

In oracle-bone script 辰 pictures a farm tool for clearing weeds, by one view the shell of a large clam (the original form of 蜃), since clam shells served as blades in early farming. The character 農 "farming" is written with it for that reason.

The Shuowen Jiezi, the Han dynasty dictionary, assigns it to the third month: "to shake; yang breath stirs, thunder and lightning shake, and it is the people's time to farm", and adds that 辰 is the star 房, which marks the seasons. From there the character came to mean an hour, a day, and the stars, as in the words for the heavenly bodies and a fine day; the branch takes its name from this. Its zodiac animal is the dragon. The Chinese dragon is a water spirit that brings rain, a sign of good fortune, not the fire-breathing monster of Western legend that a knight must slay.

The Old Chinese pronunciation is reconstructed as *[d]ər (Baxter and Sagart). Middle Chinese was dzyin.
